people, people who eat people
Charlton Heston gets all the best lines.
“Get your damn hands off me, you damn dirty ape.”
“It’s people. Soylent Green is made of people. Soylent Green is people!”
Oh, the future. Just think, a mere 19 years from now, in 2022, we too can have a severe overpopulation problem (except for any minority people, it seems, as only whiteys were in this movie– oh, except for the beautiful nubian woman Heston slaps around), sleep on stairs or in your car (unless you’re rich or a cop), and refer to hot women as “furniture” that (again, if you’re rich) comes with your new apartment. sounds like a Republican dream, eh?
Now I knew about Soylent Green from the simpsons, and amy and I have repeated the phrase “Soylent Green is people” ad nauseum for our mutual amusement for years, but somehow I’d never seen the movie. That has now changed. And I am a better person for it. This 1973 classic of the sci-fi genre has somehow missed my, and I’ll bet, your attention. Please, please, please do not miss the opportunity to see this movie (Scott, I’m talking to you especially) as it must be coming out on dvd soon since I’ m working on it now. Get some drinks, grab a pizza and settle in for a few laughs. And don’t worry if you think I’ve ruined it for you, because it’s infinitely more enjoyable to know about the end while you’re watching.
I’m now trying to decide whether this or Escape from New York is my favorite vision of the future of New York.
oh, and on a related note, if you don’t go see the core this weekend,
I officially don’t think you have a sense of humor at all. I predict this will be, by far, the best comedy of the year. I’ll let you know if I’m right on monday.
