a football kind of weekend
it had to end sometime, i guess, though for a few brief, shining seconds, i really thought the miracle of the seahawks’ luck would hold up long enough for yet another josh brown field goal kick to win the game in the final minute of regular play… but alas, my hasselbeck got sacked and took them out of range. the silver lining is that the game was much, much closer than most people expected and really could have gone either way. but you’ve got to be able to convert third-and-one, which the hawks have struggled with all season. so already i find myself looking forward to next year, hopefully with fewer injuries on the offensive side and a maturing defense, which held up well in both playoff games even with injuries and scrubs on the field.
i also finished reading one of my new favorite books this weekend, the blind side, not so coincidentally also about football, but also about society and second chances and race and a whole lot of other things. it’s already made me watch the game in a completely different fashion, focusing on the left tackle, which makes me somewhat sad to see that the season’s almost over.
in non-football-related matters, amy and i finally got around to watching an inconvenient truth this weekend, and now, of course, i’m convinced that the world’s about to be put to fiery, fiery death. not that we don’t deserve it, but it’s still kind of sad. it does seem, though, that we’re turning a bit of a corner on this global warming thing, though that could just be more the bubble in which i live than anything else; i was reminded of this as i waited for the light-rail train (see, i’m doing my part!) this morning and saw two huge chevy suburbans pull into a parking lot and only a driver get out of each one. i recently wrote about the inanity that is the still-growing trend of buying hugely inefficient vehicles, and until we find a way to curb that impulse, i guess we really are doomed.
but in more uplifting news, i saw a freakin’ fantastic chinese movie on friday, the story of ricky, which i found out about by watching this clip. you’ll know pretty immediately based on the clip whether or not this movie is for you, but if you like what you see here, let me guarantee that you won’t be disappointed by the rest of the movie– this scene is about 15 minutes in and it just gets delightfully more crazy and gore-laden as it goes on.
we also had a nice night out on friday– a rare experience, the friday night out, and at a bar, no less — celebrating the birthday of our friend nancy. happy birthday, nancy!
