History Repeats Itself

I finally picked up the copy of The Great Shark Hunt that I borrowed from a friend ages ago this morning, and I was struck by the parallels to the current administration that were found in the first piece in that book about Nixon. (I was going to exerpt some here, but then found someone who had done the exact same thing here, so I’ll just direct you that way and echo that blogger’s sentiment of “fuckers.”

though in some ways it’s reassuring ’cause we’ve already done this and more or less survived, even if it would be nice if we’d actually learn from the past. My fear is that the only thing Bush and Cheney and co might have learned from Nixon is what Thompson talks about further on in the piece:

He just may have already sketched out a last-ditch, D-Day style battle plan that would turn the tide with one stroke and scuttle any move for impeachment.

Which brings us back to the question of nuclear war…

And while i don’t know about the “nuclear” part, we’ve already seen pushes to move into Iran and start some shit there and we all know that the administration is willing to do just about anything for political rather than necessary reasons, so…

there it is, i’m depressed again.
